Jan.31- Road trip back to Salinas

Svein, the property management person for our rental apartment, came very early to check us out plus return our deposit. This is a great company to deal with, great service though mostly 'gringo' prices- see web site http://www.cuencarealestate.com

Angel, our driver and friend anhelp_68@yahoo.com, came at 8AM to drive us back to Salinas. We highly recommend Angel who speaks both Spanish and English for any of your driving needs in and around Cuenca.

This time I was able to sit in the front seat so I could take pictures of our trip. All the way to the Cajas and over the mountains the weather was perfect.

The road heading towards Cajas Park

And some of the wonderful scenery

And then the mountains in the Park itself

And then down the other side into the clouds.

Once we were below the clouds, lots and lots of fog and rain all the way until we were at the bottom on our way to Guayaquil.
                                                       Our rainy Drive

On the highway to Guayaquil there are many farms growing different produce. First the banana plantations. Notice the plastic wrap around the bananas themselves- protection from bugs and birds and supposedly makes them mature faster. Sorry for fuzzy pics!

Next we passed by miles of Cacao farms where the wonderful Ecuadorean chocolate comes from- mostly medium sized trees with red berries near the tops.

Then came the rice fields- Who would think they grow rice here!

And lastly the sugar cane fields

The scenery along that portion of our trip was mostly flat farmland, the odd village, and some foothills to make the drive interesting.

The entire trip, Cuenca to Salinas, only took 4 1/2 hours- way to go, Angel!
What was very surprising was how green everything was between Guayaquil and Salinas considering that the area around Salinas is mostly desert. They have had much rain lately- yet another sample of unseasonal weather even in Ecuador.
